GenQ - For the not so straight individual

A Music Review: The Erase

Salivating Radiohead and fans anxiously visited the mysterious www.theeraser.com many months before the actual release due to a link posted on the Radiohead official site.

The website greeted them with strange little Edward Goreyesque animations accompanied by eerie keyboard music. Others anxiously spilled their aspirations for the new CD to come out by crowding message boards and spilling their hopes and aspirations for the Radiohead front man's first solo release.

On July 11 it was finally released and instead of relying on the opinion of critics they now could hear for themselves. Reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails the CD packaging is quite interesting. A pretty lengthy cardcstock foldout with a thin paper sleeve, also with artwork on it. Next was the listening experience.

1. ?The Eraser?: A slightly upbeat track that defiantly foreshadows the electronic nature of the CD.

2. ?Analyse?: Clearly one of the best songs on the CD this song is one of those kind that draw you in from the start, with its fast paced classical style and paranoid lyrics.

3. ?The Clock?: Definitely a radio friendly song, this is one is very catchy and heavy on beats.

4. ?Black Swan?: The music isn't the most striking this about this song, more so the blunt, upfront lyrics not common in most of what Yorke writes.

5. Skip Divided? : In the tradition of ?Wolf At The door? off Radioheads last relelease ?Hail to the Thief? Yorke combines his semi-monotone singing style with a not so common almost R&B vocal melody.

6. ?Atoms for Peace?: A very sarcastic track with an ambient feel.

7. ?And It Rained All Night?: Like the second track this song has awesome background music yet undeniably pessimistic yes beautiful lyrics.

8. ?Harrowdown Hill? Featuring more bass this is one of the more slow paced songs.

9. ?Cymbal Rush?: Smartly Yorke ended with one of his longest and most beautiful track.

It's hard to label this CD a solo project due to the ever present Johnny greenwood who's contributed a lot to the album and even performs live with Yorke. For anyone that's heard Radioheads past work they will agree some of the songs off this CD take influence from past Radiohead albums ?Hail to the Thief? ?Kid A? And ?Amnesiac?. However this CD is one of the best releases of this year with a distinct style of it own really showing how far this little English red headed front man can take it.
