Arizona Rejects Gay Marriage BanArizona has become the first state to deny a constitutional ban on same sex marriage. Arizona became the first state to defeat an amendment to ban same-sex marriage Tuesday. Seven other states voted to define marriage between a man and woman while Arizona citizens made history by voting against the ban. Those banning gay marriage were Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin. "It is a victory against the forces seeking to take away rights and benefits for unmarried couples in the state," said Kyrsten Sinema, chair of Arizona Together and a member of the state's Legislature.
