I LOVE Michael Buble’s music. It is classy, smooth, and his voice is amazing. I’ve almost come to appreciate his renditions of classic jazz and swing songs more than those that sang them originally.
His versions of songs by Frank Sinatra are so cool and smooth that I can’t resist. So you can imagine how excited I was to hear about his newest release “Call Me Irresponsible” (released on May 1, 2007 by Reprise). I waited to hear the album as I cracked open the CD case with bated breath, hoping it was just as good as his previous releases…
Luckily, I wasn’t disappointed for the most part. Buble’s voice is just as cool and smooth as always, and the choices of songs fits well with the formula that he’s been successful with before. The opening track is “The Best is Yet To Come,” one of those Frank Sinatra songs I mentioned that I like more than the original. The suave voice and finger snapping opening followed by a big brassy entrance got me all goosebumpy. It is quickly followed by a fast-paced “It Had Better Be Tonight,” keeping the blood pumping and the foot tapping.
The thing that got me less impressed with this album compared to his previous was the lack of interest I had for many of the songs in the middle of the album. They’re quite good, no doubt, and I enjoyed them immensely through my first few listens of the album, but after a while the tracks at the beginning and the end are all I really listen to. This tends to happen with most albums, you pick out the tracks you really like, but with Buble’s previous works I guess I didn’t notice this phenomenon as much.
“Call Me Irresponsible” is a must have for any fans of either Michael Buble or of good music in general. The songs are great and well produced, and Buble delivers just as great a performance as ever. While I became less a fan of some of the tracks after a while, the CD has immense staying power due to its timeless music and Buble’s talent. Expect to have this album in heavy rotation for a while.
