Bay City school gay straight alliance controversyThe recently formed gay straight alliance at Bay City Central High School has come under fire by a parent from the school. Pride Source has reported that the gay straight alliance at Bay City Central High School has come under fire just one month after being established by a parent concerned over the group’s promotion of the “homosexual lifestyle”.
Kimberly Bublitz, parent of a child who attends the high school, said in a phone interview that the issue at hand over the promotion was “what is appropriate for children”. “On the surface, they seem to be about promoting tolerance and preventing violence. But when I did research, I found that is not the only thing the GSA does.” Ms Bublitz suggests that other gay straight alliances formed encourage students not to tell their parents about personal involvement in the groups due to other parents being homophobic, and that one website referenced contained information on anal sex. Ms Bublitz denied being homophobic, and said “I am all for groups that prevent discrimination and violence and hate crimes and hate-related messages. I think in order to have a Gay Straight Alliance, it should focus on prevention of violence and promoting tolerance, not to teach students about homosexual or heterosexual behavior. It should strictly stick to the honorable goal of preventing violence and promoting tolerance in the school setting.”
