This new Australian feature film, Burke & Wills comes from two up and coming actors who decided to make their own film. This huge gamble paid off as the pair travelled to New York for it’s first screening at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. It is rare these days to see a pair that actually wrote, directed, produced, and acted the entire film.

Shot in Sydney, Burke & Wills is a coming of age film as two young men struggle to accept where their life is at and what direction it will ultimately take. Growing up in a tough city is filled with emotions, both good and bad. The coming together of Burke and Wills sets a chain of events in motion with the ending being a realistic and confronting one.

Wills responds to an advertisement as Burke is looking for a flatmate. The two do not hit it off at first but after some time they begin to get to know each other quit well. With very different backgrounds the two find they are on the same page in life, and love. They are just two guys trying to get by. When Burkes Grandmother dies, he is left some money from her will.

This new income could be seen a positive step to help Burke get on with his life. At the same time it ultimately becomes his downfall and his decline affects Wills as well. This film is a very emotional and honest look at the struggles that we all go through in our lives. The characters are honest and this comes across well on screen.

Created from the heart, Torr and Zeremes inspire young actors and those at the beginning of their careers to create and do what they believe in and understand. Burke and Wills is a promising film showing the world what amazing local talent we have in Australia. Burke and Wills also send out a message that mental illness and depression should not be ignored.
