Dark Angels

On Friday, July 27th, GenQ was invited to the opening night of Katie Underwood's new play, Dark Angels, and we were not disappointed!

The play is set in a strip-cum-fetish club (Lilly's) where Mame (played by Katie) is the head of the showgirls, and is billed as the Queen Of Sin. She is sent a threatening letter by the Burlesque Butcher, who has a habit of killing the showgirls of Melbourne. When the police are called in, Detective Brown (John King) and Detective Christine "Junior" Dixon (Cath Jamison, who actually won a Rainbow Award and Australian Magician Of The Year Award) turn up, dressed in what they consider to be incognito, despite Detective Brown being dressed as if he's about to march in Leather Pride!

After a few electro-jazz tracks, we find the killer closing in and Mame's young lover, Diedre (Sarah Hamilton), murdered. The Detectives start to interview the suspects: The Senator (Leo Taylor) who is trying to close this Temple Of Evil full of homosexuals with signs and protests; Astrid (Joanna Seidel), the club's artistic director who is jealous of Mame's success. Then again, maybe it's Detective Brown himself, since the victims have been his ex-girlfriends ... Can Mame be saved?

All through the show, two characters who were crowd favourites were Erin Walsh and Kelly Ann Doll, who played Mame's "Starletts" and were there at Mame's every beckoned call (also known as her bell), more than happy to get down on all fours and act as chairs for Mame to sit on when conversing with another character.

One thing I loved about this play was it's blatant overacting. Audience members could be forgiven for not realising it was intentional, though there is a key line of Mame's in the show which says "you may think I'm a slut, you might think I'm a whore ... and you might be right ... but I'm allowed to overact!"

Dark Angels was directed by Noel Anderson, written by Allen Wilde, and featured music by Tim Meyer and Katie Underwood. With hot costumes, awesome dance numbers, sultry singing, and mystical magic, this is a show that you will not want to miss. Be warned, however, if you are easily offended, this show might not be for you!

Dark Angels is showing in Melbourne at Ondergronds Bar (cnr Russell St & Flinders Lane) every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 8pm, and Sunday nights at 6pm until Sunday August 19th. Tickets are $45 (Friday/Saturday) or $35 (Thursday/Sunday).

Dark Angels will also be showing in Sydney in March 2008, so keep your eyes out for that! For tickets, go to www.moshtix.com.au or the Dark Angels website.
