Elizabeth Taylor to keep Van Gogh paintingA US court has ruled that Elizabeth Taylor will be allowed to keep a Van Gogh painting which was allegedly looted. Elizabeth Taylor purchased Vue de l'Asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Remy, a painting by Van Gogh, for 94,000 pounds in 1963. After a legal dispute alleging that the painting was ‘looted’, a US court has ruled that Taylor will be permitted to keep the artwork.
The lawsuit was filed after a family who previously owned the painting, said that they wished to have the painting returned to them after they allege it was looted. The case was originally heard in 2005, where courts claimed that the family took too long to take any legal action over the painting. This decision was upheld by a Court of Appeals in San Francisco. Taylor, who turned 75 in February, said via statement “This affirms my great belief in the American judicial process. I am very grateful.” “It's wonderful to have Monsieur Vincent Van Gogh in my living room.” The piece was thought to have been looted by the Nazis in the mid 1900s. It is now believed that the Van Gogh piece is now worth USD$10 – 15 million (AUD$12.1 - $18.1 million).
