FaghagsSo what are they? Well it's not a recognised word as when I type it my spellchecker persists to tell me that I am misspelling ?Afghans?. So, it's not in the Oxford English, but it is in the Queeplanet dictionary. So what are they? Watered-down, a faghag is a straight woman who loves gay men. The word ?faghag? derives from two words ? ?fag?, as in gay man, and ?hag? as in an old woman who is repulsive in appearance or manner. These two insults are put together to define a woman who would opt for fag-bangle (gay boyfriend) any day. It doesn't mean that they are all repulsive in appearance or manner although some really are. You may be thinking that this word is not one a woman might choose for herself but it is being reclaimed along with words like ?queer?, ?fag? and ?poof?. Lets look at some famous faghags ? Madonna has her gay pals, Lady Diana had the most famous fag friend in history ? Sir. Elton, and then, of course, there is the divine Miss. M ? Bette Midler, who kicked off her career by performing in gay clubs. Of course, there is the ultimate faghag ? Carrie Bradshaw. Her fag-bangle Stanford must be the smuggest guy on the globe. I know gay men that would willingly wed Ms. Bradshaw. Who wouldn't ? shopping every day, fabulous celebrity filled events plus you get to hang out with 3 more of the coolest faghags out there ? Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. Why are girls attracted to gay men? Well, we do everything that their boyfriend would, except we don't care what they look like. Take them shopping, talk about sex and men, always have the juiciest gossip and watch all of the chick-flicks with them. I once heard a faghag describe gay men as, ?will take you shopping and not expect a blowjob out of it?! Fair comment I suppose. However, some faghags are just desperate old spinsters who prey on us as a last resort to getting a man. In the late 90s we were blessed with a TV show dedicated to the theme of faghags and fag-bangles - Will & Grace. This is about an average gay man (if such beings exist) and his best friend (faghag) Grace. Running parallel to this is Jack, a screaming queen and his faghag Karen, the man-eating, money-hungry, power-bitch-ice-woman. This show presents an excellently hilarious (if a little tiresome after a while) example of not only camp but also faghaggery.
