George Newhouse 'whacked' by OveringtonLabor Wentworth candidate George Newhouse claims he was whacked by journalist Caroline Overington. After conflicting reports had been issued throughout the day, Labor candidate for Wentworth George Newhouse has spoken out on being slapped by award winning journalist Caroline Overington.
The alleged incident took place at the Bellevue Hill Public School in Sydney’s south during polling for the election. Witnesses claim to have seen Overington yell at Newhouse before slapping him. Commenting on the incident, Mr Newhouse said “It was a completely unprovoked attack. “She didn't say anything. She just slapped me. It wasn't a slap, it was a whack – it was painful. It left a red mark. It's extremely offensive. I was shocked.” Mr Newhouse also quashed speculation of any chemistry between he and Ms Overington, and said “I have never had any relationship with her in my life. “I am offended that you would ask that. I have never been hit before in my adult life. It was an unprovoked attack.” With sixty-two percent of the vote counted, Newhouse is likely to lose the seat of Wentworth to Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull, with a minor swing against the Labor party.
