Homophobic quips on Radio 1... again.

Rio Ferdinand has had to defend himself following a homophobic quip on BBC breakfast DJ, Chris Moyles’ Radio 1 show.

Rio Ferdinand has had to defend himself following a homophobic quip on BBC breakfast DJ, Chris Moyles’ Radio 1 show.

When prompted by Moyles, Ferdinand announced, “that is not my bag… going out with geezers… you’re a faggot”. This was shortly followed by an apology from Ferdinand, stating, “I’m sorry. I’m not homophobic”, after the BBC received two phone complaints

It may come as a surprise that someone who is so well versed in discrimination would be so careless. The Manchester United and England football star has been praised for his work with stamping out racism in football and is a supporter of the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ campaign.

This is not the first time Moyles’ show has been in hot water over homophobia. Stonewall marchers in this summer’s Europride parade, in London, held banners demanding the dismissal of Moyles from the BBC, due to his belittling of gay colleague Aled, and his discriminative sense of humour.
