Hot Blooded

Homophobia refers to fear and hatred of homosexuals and to anti-homosexual beliefs and prejudices. Typical homophobic beliefs include the idea that homosexuality is unnatural, sick, perverse or dangerous, while heterosexuality is natural and normal.
Another term is heterosexism, and this term is useful because it emphases the following:That people who are heterosexual receive privileges and benefits and recognitions while those who are non-heterosexual do not. In other words, that there is a system of injustice and oppression organised around sexuality.

Sometime last week my friend and I went to visit this mental health thing at our local community center ( mainly for her). I got bored and decided to wonder off on my own. I went down the hall and saw that it was "blood donor day". Seeing how I've never gave blood before and I thought my karma needed a good boost, I decided to do it.

So I went in gave my name and number to a really cute volunteer ( I was totally flirting). He handed me a pamphlet and a questionnaire and pointed me to a cubical to fill out everything else out. I said "thanks" in my cutest voice possible and almost skipped all the way to my cubical. After I finished a lady took my questions and told me that I have to wait for twenty minutes and help myself to cookies. If you know me you'll know that I hate to wait for anything, so I did what anyone in my shoes would do, I started to talk to complete strangers. I looked around the room and only saw four people. One old lady that smelt of pickles ( eww!), a couple of active church goers ( not stepping in there... yet!) and a chick. So i turned to her and asked totally jokingly, " Come here often?" She looks at me and then buries herself in one of those Daniel Steal novels. After a whole plate of cookies and 50 doodles of the nurse standing in the corner later, my turn was up. I walked over to a very small room and a lady named Cheryl. She took my pulse, my blood pressure and asked if I ate anything before ( Duh!... Plate!...Cookies!), I said "yes". Next came the " QUESTIONS"....

Have you ever had sex? Yes.
Have you ever shared needles? No.
Have you ever had sex with a man even once? .....

This is way the truth came out. Now what do I do? Lie? I told the truth. I said " well Ive only ever slept with men, I'm gay". She looks at me ( more liked stared), and puts a mark down on the sheet. The rest of the question were pretty much straight forward, typical questions.

Have you ever had sex in exchange for money? Yes.
Do you wear a condom? yes.
When was the last time you where sexually active? 2 weeks ago.
In the course of a year how many times did you use a condom? Always.

Then she takes out this big Blue book, to check all my answers. Everything checked out ok, until she saw that because I've had sex with men that I was an " Extremely High Risk" for giving blood. She tells me that at this time that no male homosexual can give blood. I look at her, then he book and then back at her and say " What!?" She repeats herself, I tell her " That's fucked up!" and that I know more straight men and women who are less safe then most gay men. She tells me once again that BC medicals rules and that my blood is considered tainted, it could be caring the aids virus. I get up and say " TAINTED! What are you talking about? Tainted!" She apologizes and tells me that I can help myself to all the cookies I want. I look at her with total disgust and then give her the finger. I see my friend and she says to me that she's signing up too. I tell here we're leaving. She asks why? I tell her that BC doesn't want tainted gay blood ( I pretty much yelled it) and pull her out of the building. At this point I'm really mad and want to hit something, instead all I can do is scream. The my friend ( trying to comfort me) has the nerve to say " It's ok James! I know how you feel." I look at her and tell her bluntly, " You're straight! You can give blood whenever you want! You don't know what I'm feeling at all!" It was a very quiet drive home after that. So here's my beef for the world, " Do gay males have to lie now if they want to give blood?" They do the same tests on gay blood, as they do on straight blood.... Don't they?
