Lovesick (Legaturi bolnavicioase) 2005Lovesick is a raw, confronting story of the taboo forms of love. See it at this years MQFF! Lovesick is not your average lesbian teen drama. Instead, we are thrown into the complex world of brother and sister duo Kiki (played by the beautiful Maria Popistasu) and Sandu (Tudor Chiila) and of young humanities student Alex (Ioana Barbu) in exposed to their complicated love triangle.
In the intial scene we see Kiki and Sandu spooning naked on a bed; Sandu stroking Kiki gently. What follows is a story about love, expressed in two of the more taboo forms in our society. One of these being the incestual relationship between Kiki and Sandu, and the other between the two girls, who are in the closet to those around them. The movie takes the audience on a rollercoaster ride of human emotion, from happiness to sadness, anger to regret, lust and passion to disgust and distrust. Whilst Kiki seemingly attempts to break free of the shackles her brother has placed upon her and live happily with Alex, she is unable to break free of the shackles she has placed upon herself. Furthermore, Sandu himself acts as a constant barricade between Alex and Kiki’s relationship. ![]() Despite having such a comfortable, loving and often sexually charged relationship, certain strains take a toll on the young female lovers and eventually Alex must make a choice about sending Kiki away. For those of you unable to understand Russian, I advise you NOT to forget your glasses and thinking caps for this one. Not that it’s a hard film to get your head around, more that the subtitles are often slow in important scenes and sometimes its hard to tell who’s saying what. Although this film merely scrapes the surface regarding sibling love affairs, and further complicates itself by throwing a young lesbian affair on top, I still found it worth the watch. And who knows, perhaps Lovesick director Tudor Giurgiu has unknowingly paved the way for more morally testing topics to be explored in films to come.
