Matthew Bourne ignited the theatre world with his stunning reinvention of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. Boldly shattering the traditional concept of swans in tutus, director/choreographer Bourne has created a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for recent times.

Acclaimed since its 1995 premiere in London as a landmark achievement on the international stage and dazzling audiences on Broadway, London's West End and worldwide. Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake has won over 30 international theatre awards, including 3 Broadway Tony awards.

I attended the Melbourne premiere Wednesday night and was blown away by this very different version of the traditional Swan Lake ballet. This up to date version is seductive, sensual and very pleasing in the eye for both male and female.

The passion of the entire cast is evident before your eyes. I felt as if this was the first time the cast had performed, such was the energy displayed on stage. The dedication comes across within the opening act and does not let go throughout the performance.

The gay twist is that the prince is driven to unspeakable acts by evidence that his mother is becoming quiet close with the man that he secretly desires. While the story of Swan Lake is a sad one to say the least, the emotion and themes of the original story are still prevalent in today’s society.

The dancing is so stylish and not to mention sensual. While watching, it was amazing how relaxed I felt as the cast so effortlessly strutted their stuff before my eyes. The entire show takes you to a special place that will throw you into their world of sheer beauty.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is a night out that you do not want to miss by any means.
