After being a little sceptical about how Missy Higgins was going to fill a stadium and be what she has been before, beautiful, sexy and completely talented, I was blown away by the concert I saw on Wednesday night at the Rod Laver Arena. The intimate mode wasnât quite as intimate as I expected, but her voice carried and spoke to the audience, well at least it did to me. There were thousands of people and it was both entertaining and heart wrenching.
Missy played a mixture of old favourites from her first album, such as Scar, Sound of White, Special Two and her first ever single. Intermixed were songs from the new Album, âOn a Clear Nightâ which were brilliant live. âWhere I Stoodâ was beautifully sung and the band also made the song stand out.
Not only was the music fantastic but Missyâs stage presence was engaging and gorgeous. She laughed with the audience and when one member of the audience shouted âMissy I am pregnant with your babyâ she appeared coy and whispered into the microphone âI thought we used protectionâ which made the audience laugh and cheer. She also spotted a sign held in the audience early on and laughed as she read out âMissy will you touch my Higgins?â Playfully, Missy engaged her band members, asking if theyâd also noticed that it was only ever female fans that yelled out or proposed such comments at her gigs.

One thing that you donât get when listening to any CD is an explanation as to why people write the songs they do. Missy spent quite a bit of time letting the audience know what she was thinking and feeling and where her inspiration came from, which was both refreshing and established a further connection to the music. We also got insight into a more candid Missy, the shy, humble Geelong girl that admits sheâs a slack friend. The talented, intelligent, in-tune artist, that sees beauty and potential in all thatâs around her.
It was an inspired performance, one that is definitely recommended and I am only sorry that I canât see her again and again and again.
