Monty Python's SPAMALOT

Once every now and then, comes a show that goes like this: You laughalot, clapalot and even sing a little!

Everyone who's a Python lover would know the story (or lack of) of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This is it's musical translation to the stage, and what a translation it makes.
I think the thing that makes this work is the involvement of Eric Idle in the writing of the show, which enables the cast to present both many old favourite moments from the movie (I want a shrubbery!) and some new moments and characters (watch out for the gay love twist!)

Speaking of characters, it's a great cast of relative unknowns here. Bille Brown, who is known for his work both with the Royal Shakespeare Company and also on  Aussie TV plays King Arthur with a great sense of comedic timing and plenty of heart. His sidekick "horse" Patsy is played here with incredible flair by Derek Metzger. Lancelot is played by Stephen Hall, who many may remember from the telemovie "The King", where he played Bert Newton. The stunning Lady of the Lake is played by the aptly voiced and bosomed Lucinda Shaw. Lucinda is a new face, but is sure to soon become a star!
Jason Langley, David Whitney and Ben Lewis are both hilarious and perfect for their roles, respectively as Sir Robin, Sir Bedevere and Sir Galahad. Rounding off this finely talented cast is Mark Conaghan in his dual roles as The Historian, Not Dead Fred and the starry eyed Prince(ss) Herbert.

The songs are just as funny and help to move the action along (or make us laugh even harder) and at just over 2 hours, this is one of the shorter shows I've seen.

There are alot of "in" theatre jokes, and I think the audience's favourite moment is the chance to sing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"

It's booked in for an open ended run at Her Majesty's Theatre, so find your grail at the Maj!
