Neighbours features same-sex relationship

Popular TV Soap Neighbours now has a developing storyline of a same-sex relationship.

Over the course of 21 years, Neighbours has become a favourite Australian television soap covering a wide range of audiences. Last night, to the delight of a particular demographic of viewers, a same-sex relationship has been established.

The relationship consists of Chris, Pepper's mum who works alongside Janae Timmins in a mechanic workshop, and Carol, a real estate agent.

The two characters are living together, but it is assumed that the pair are just good friends. But, it is only a matter of time before Pepper learns of her mum having a girlfriend.

This developing storyline is expected to be featured throughout the remainder of this year's season. In the past, gay characters have been featured in the show on a temporary basis (the most recent being Lana Crawford, who fell for show favourite Sky Mangel, played by Stephanie Macintosh), but this is the first time a same-sex relationship has been featured to such detail on the drama.

Just what will develop with this relationship which is now going through unfamiliar territory on Australian soaps? Only time will tell.

Neighbours is broadcast at 6.30pm Monday - Friday on Channel 10.
