New Jersey legislature calls for civil unions over gay marriageNew Jersey governor shocks local gays by not signing civil unions into law. The New Jersey state legislature voted on Friday to recognize civil unions for same sex couples instead of allowing gay marriage. NJ Governor Jon Corzine did not sign the bill into law on Friday as many had expected. The governor who has said he supports civil unions in principal now wants to have it examined clause by clause.
Still the governor acknowledged that he understands how important it is to same-sex couples to have legal protections. The law will go into effect 60 days after it is signed.
