Opening the Closet Door - Earlier? Is it more common for teenagers in today's society to 'come out' earlier than in the past without fear of reprisal? Teenagers these days are now coming out at earlier ages, as society's ?homophobic? attitude begins to relax. Forty or so years ago, homosexuality was unheard of - ?taboo? if you like. It is only in the last couple of decades that it has really become accepted in the community as a way of life. With the increased education about being gay, bi, or lesbian in schools today, teenagers are becoming more accepting of homo or bisexuality, and feel comfortable with themselves. As such, they are coming out at younger ages. Although the most common fear for teenagers who are considering coming out is to their parents, they feel most comfortable confiding in close friends or the like. This can't always go to plan. Although I myself had no issues, I know some people who lost many friends trying to do this. I know I have seen, as I walk the streets of Melbourne, gay couples with linked arms or holding hands. This is definitely a good thing now as Australia becomes more aware of ?alternative? lifestyles, as some call it. We're not there yet, but if we keep at it, it will get to a point where teenagers, and adults alike, can come out without any fear of abuse, whether it be verbal, psychical, or emotional. I'm sure there are people out there that may have their own views or comments about this article. If you do, by all means feel free to email them to rod@generationq.net
