Positive Action for Climate ChangePlanet Ark's annual National Tree Day is on Sunday 29 July. In An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore lists ‘Planting a tree’ as one of the ten most important and powerful things we can do to help stop global warming, as ‘a single tree will absorb one tonne of carbon dioxide over its lifetime’. So grab your shovels! It’s time to take real and positive action by planting native trees and shrubs on Planet Ark’s ‘National Tree Day’ 2007.
The understanding that we need to act now to reduce our impact on the environment has never been higher and more people than ever are looking for ways to help. ‘National Tree Day’ provides us all with a real opportunity to take action. The simple act of planting a tree can help combat climate change, provide food and shelter for our wildlife and helps us connect positively with our natural world. “Environmental issues are now receiving real attention and the community’s desire to do something to help the planet is unprecedented,” says Rosa Del Ponte, Planet Ark’s National Tree Day Manager. “We hope that this increased awareness will translate into positive action and that this year National Tree Day will be bigger and better than ever.” Last year, over 300,000 volunteers planted 1.6 million native trees and shrubs at 3,600 sites around the country. Thanks to people from all walks of life coming together to green up Australia, the total number of native trees and shrubs planted at National Tree Day sites since 1996 is over 10.5 million! Major sponsors Toyota and the AMP Foundation continue to provide valuable on the ground assistance with AMP Financial Planners and Toyota dealerships digging deep at tree-planting sites in their local communities. This year, National Tree Day falls on Sunday 29 July. Everyone is encouraged to join Planet Ark in taking positive action for climate change.
