Seriously - The Pet Shop Boys Reinterpreted
queerplanet's AJ Marquez and Leigh May attended the Midsumma premier of Seriously - a musical incorporating songs from the Pet Shop Boys. If you are a Pet Shop Boys fan, and let's face it, who isn't, then get down to the show!

Wednesday 24th January, 2006 Myself (AJ) and Leigh were running late for the premiere of Seriously - The Pet Shop Boys Reinterpreted. I had no idea what to expect, as I had just been told I was reviewing it. I must live under a rock as I had heard nothing about the show or who was in it or anything.
It turned out the doors weren't even open when we arrived so we had a brief opportunity to check out the who's who crowd including John Foreman, Anthony Callea and John-Michael Howson.
The show was created by David Knox who also wrote last year's Midsumma smash "I Should Be So Lucky", however this show isn't a Pet Shop Boys Musical, infact it has nothing to do with the Pet Shop Boys. It's art in its rawest form. 5 singers, a string quartet and a grand piano. The music is beautiful and the show is open to interpretation, though the poetry is loosely tied together with the theme of love. Love whether it be unrequited, gay, straight or motherly.
The cast were extremely professional and totally talented and included Maria Mercedes (best known as Carmella's mum on Neighbours), David Gould who is recognised as The Mikado for Essgee's production or as Caiaphas in the arena tour of JC Superstar with John Farnham, Paul Ross who has just finished a 3 year tour with Mamma Mia!, Anthony Costanzo who is relitavely unknown to the general public and completing the set is Tania Doko, known as the singing half of Bachelor Girl.
The arrangements of the show and the piano are done by Mr Dean Lotherington who has done a superb job of capturing a new essence and life of these old songs and the string quartet just take it to another level.
All in all I can't wait to go back and see the show again!
