Silverchair clean up at the ARIAsSilverchair have won 5 ARIA Awards, including Album of the Year and Single of the Year. On the evening of the 21st ARIA Awards, Silverchair have made history by becoming the musical act to win the most ARIA Awards in total. On Sunday, the chair added five more to their collection, including the two big awards of the night, Album and Single of the Year.
When told of their record breaking evening, Daniel Johns said “Even John Farnham? Even Barnsey?... Can I get a hallelujah!?” Silverchair would have been perfectly content with winning just one or two awards, but instead won five. Lead singer Johns said “I think the Australian music industry at the moment is magnificently healthier than ever. “We're on fire, we're the best nation in the world in music and we're thrilled to be a part of it.” The group was up against Powderfinger, who Silverchair have recently toured with on the Across The Great Divide tour, and won in each of the four categories that both groups were nominated in. Although there was no major rivalry between the two, the group intends to jokingly brag “just a little bit”. When asked if the group would make another record, "We're breaking up after this one... but we might come back [laughs]." Silverchair head off to the United States in just under two weeks “to try and make Australian music worldwide”. The five ARIAs that Silverchair won at the 21st ARIA Awards were: Highest Selling Single – Straight Lines Best Rock Album – Young Modern Best Group – Young Modern Single of the Year – Straight Lines Album of the Year – Young Modern
