Single in the City: Dating the Leather Boys

Vanilla, leather, latex boys...time for the Single Guy to get out there and do a bit of research into other scenes. You may be a little surprised that there is a kinky streak in all of us.

In an effort to learn more about the gay subcultures in Sydney and shake our vanilla (normal sex practices) status, my friend Tom and I decided to check out Manacle, Sydney's leather club. Tom is doing a gender studies course at University. I had always been interested in exploring the leather scene. Safety in numbers, we figured!

When we arrived, we realised we were the only ones without any chest hair or any leather gear. We met Bill, a hard core leather daddy. He told us the leather scene has been around since last century with some of the first gay bars in America being leather bars that opened in the 1950s. Even fisting (the sexual practice of sticking your hand and elbow into someone's ass) was invented in 1962. Yes, there is a museum on the history of leather including an exhibition on fisting in America! Why has there not been a doco on SBS on this?

Bill says leather boys are just like any other type of gay boys. Most have very vanilla day jobs. Leather gear can be anything from a dog collar to chaps, vests, boots and uniform. It does not necessarily mean that you are into bondage. You can wear leather and enjoy vanilla sex. Leather is just one of many fetishes around Sydney. Some like feet, role playing and many like Bill are into leather.

Like any sub culture, there is a particular language and traditional customs. For example, in the old days many leather boys wore coloured hankies to determine what types of sexual practices they were into?.. Depending on whether you wore it on the right or left, it had different meanings:

Left Colour Right
Top Black Bottom
Wants head Light Blue Likes to give head
Fucker Navy blue Likes to get fucked
Shaver Red/White Strip Likes to get shaved
Hung/+8 Inches Mustard Likes big dicks
Safe sex top Chequered Safe sex bottom
Uncut Brown Lace likes uncut
Pisser/WS Yellow Likes to receive

So you get the picture? Which side are you leaning? Are you a lefty or righty? It seems left are the active roles and right the passive roles.

If you want to get into the culture, you also need to learn the leather lingo (editors note: Some definitions may disturb some readers):
SIR - A term to refer to a Master or Daddy
BOY - A term to refer to a Boy, usually not as submissive as a slave in a relationship, just depends
TOP - Usually the one that is the active sexual partner (fucker)
BOTTOM - Usually the one that is the passive sexual partner (fuckee)
W/S - Watersports (urinating on someone)
RIMMING - Licking or Eating Ass FF - Fist Fucking
SLING - An apparatus usually made of leather or some type of webbing hung from the ceiling used in fucking or fisting
COLLAR - A symbol of ownership given to a Slave by his Master
CBT - Cock and Ball Torture
TT - Tit Torture

So now you can change your internet profile and start asking for a bit of Yellow WS followed by CBT and a little TT on the side. I have to admit that Tom and I felt a little overwhelmed by all the information but our introduction into leather left us with more questions and more curious....time to do some research and start buying some gear?
