Single in the City: Fag StagCan straight guys be a single gay guy's best friend? Are these single fag stags just using us to get our fag hag women? They say that behind every gay man, there is a straight girl (also known as a fag hag). Recently, there is also a straight bloke standing right next to him, the fag stag. My friend Jerry is a self-confessed fag stag. He goes to the gym, gets his hair cut every three weeks, goes out on Oxford Street, knows about wine and lives with a gay guy. He's gay, right? Wrong! He is what is known as a fag stag, the new male equivalent of a fag hag. Jerry says that he has a wide circle of friends of varying interests and styles. ?I enjoy the company of my gay friends because they are fun, they are great to hang out with, they bring a different perspective to things, and I learn new things (some things which I don't necessarily wish to know and can be applied). It's also refreshing to talk to males without reverting to discussions about sports, chicks, tits, and cars (I'm sure there are gay guys out there that do talk about these things, just not my gay friends),? adds Jerry. Fag stags are a growing breed. Maybe it is the rise of gay-themed television such as Will and Grace, Queer as Folk and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. In America, there is even a reverse reality show called Straight Eye for the Queer Guy. Many heterosexual men like Jerry no longer feel the need to keep their gay friends in the closet for fear of others getting the wrong impression. It is cool to be a fag stag and according to Jerry most of his straight male friends now have gay friends. It is no longer cool to be homophobic. Do fag stags ever get the urge to bat for the other team? ?No,? according to Jerry. ?I might be inspired or motivated by them, or envious of some of my gay friends' notches on the bedpost but I have never wished to be anyone else other than who I am,? he says. Famous fag stags include Ben Affleck, Erick McCormack from Will & Grace, macho guys like Colin Farell and cuties like Matthew Broderick and Robbie Wiliams. Other fag stags say they prefer to avoid the kind of testosterone-fuelled competition they feel with straight men. Do you have a fag stag? Email The Single Guy at sydney102@hotmail.com
