TRANSPHOBIAA short essay on transphobia by Generation Q's Laura Sacks TRANSPHOBIA/TRANSFEAR/TRANSIGNORANCE/TRANSBLINDING/TRANSHUMANBEING/TRANSLIFE Transphobia refers to various kinds of aversions towards transsexuality and transsexual or transgender people, often taking the form of refusal to accept a person's expression of their internal gender identity (see Phobia - terms indicating prejudice or class discrimination). Whether intentional or not, transphobia can have severe consequences for the object of the negative attitude. Many transpeople also experience homophobia from people who incorrectly associate the medically recognized condition of gender identity disorder as a form of homosexuality” From day one, we are born into a world of differences and similarities. The cookie cutter houses are the ones that give the differences those bad looks. It is a popularity contest from day one. Jane has nicer shoes so she is at the top. John, he plays football and everyone loves him. But what happens, when that mold doesn’t fit? Many in the gay and lesbian community feel they are discriminated against every day from people that fit the mold. We are all human beings, we eat and sleep and breathe the same way. Why is it that separate will truly never be equal? If a human being is a great worker and a great person, why is that he/she can’t be taken seriously. They would be taken seriously if they were complete in their mold status. Perfect shoes, tie, and blazer, beautiful heels, dress, and nice hair. Well let’s change it up a bit, how about a woman who identifies as a man and vica versa? Is he/she of any arm to others by living their life this way? Absolutely NOT. The problem with society today is that noses are where they shouldn’t be. A trans man or woman is one who feels they were born into the wrong body from birth. One may end up getting a sex change to become that sex. Others choose to live the life as the opposite sex while residing in the body of what they were born in. Once again, their business. Yet just like the popular topic of gay marriages, what one feels is wrong, one must discriminate against. Transmen and women like gays are often abused physically and mentally through out their life. They are abused in the form of discrimination. I find it unheard of that in my own experience and research, most of that hatred is from the GLBT community. Transphobia like homophobia is an on going topic of discrimination. It will take further educating people and ending the ignorance. However, even after that many minds may not change. This is an issue I plan on writing further about. I am in the process of starting a book of essays. If you know anyone that is transgender or if you are, please contact me.
