Texas has most gay families with children

When most people think of Texas, they probably think of a conservative state that produced one of the most conservative presidents in US history. However according to a recent study, Texas also has the most gay couples with children in the country!

According to the Gay and Lesbian Atlas; San Antonio, Texas has the largest amount of gay couples with kids in America.

The study is based on the most recent U.S. Census data. It found that San Antonio has the highest percentage of gay couples raising children in the entire nation. Two other Texas cities also ranked up there with Houston coming in at fourth and Fort Worth-Arlington area at fifth.

Nationally, about 25 percent of gay couples have children living in their homes. And generally, same-sex couples and their children live in areas where other people also have kids.

The study looked at children who are being raised by at least one biological parent, as well as children who were adopted by same-sex couples.

One explanation is that minority same-sex couples are more likely to have children than white same-sex couples. Texas has a large Hispanic population, which might partially explain why its gay couples are more likely to have children, said Gary J. Gates, who co-authored the Atlas study.
