A surprisingly good film with a good cast set in Vienna. Edward Norton plays Eisenheim a magician who is kept from his true love Sophie, a Duchess. The social structure at the time was that rich people were simply not allowed to date the lower class.
This film has so many themes running through it at once. Drama, romance and mystery are the main themes. Vienna in the 19th century has never looked so good. As the film begins as we learn that Eisenheim and Sophie were friends as children. Eisenheim has returned home many years later only to be reunited with Sophie once again. The problem is that she is engaged to a Prince.
Eisenheim is asked to perform at the local palace. It is here that the Prince and Sophie see his magic for the first time up close. As the trick unfolds it gives the audience a clue as to what this film holds in store and just how deep the connection between Eisenheim and Sophie really is.
The costumes and the sets were simply amazing. At times I was even focused on the sets and the props slightly more than the actual story and the dialogue. Edward Nortons performance was impressive overall. Biel on the other hand was somewhat less convincing in her role as Sophie.
The Illusionist is a strong film with a good story and some amazing visuals. If you are in the mood for a film that has it all then I recommend The Illusionist.
