World AIDS Day in SydneyFriday, 1 December, Sydney will be covered in red ribbons and holding a series of events to mark World AIDS Day. ACON, the Aids Council of New South Wales, have taken creating awareness of World AIDS Day in Sydney to a new level this year. Over 200 volunteers will be donating their time on Friday for the Red Ribbon Appeal. Red Ribbons and Wristbands will be available for purchase at no less than 25 locations in the Sydney CBD, and also online at http://www.redribbonday.org.au. Adrian Lovney, President for ACON, stresses how important this crucial fundraising event is. "The money we raise through the Red Ribbon Appeal is vital to the work of ACON as it helps us prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS through education campaigns as well as provide the services and facilities essential to the health and wellbeing of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS across NSW." A number of events will also be happening across Sydney, including a Candlelight AIDS Memorial in Hyde Park to commemorate the people who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS. The hour long ceremony will commence at 8.30pm, and will be at the northern end of Hyde Park. Holding The Man, a stage production which has continually received near perfect reviews, will have a special performance for ACON. It commences at 8pm at the Griffin Theatre. Also, Chauvel Cinemas will be hosting a benefit screening of 3 Needles, directed by acclaimed Canadian director Thom Fitzgerald. The film tells a story of a disease and its victims. The screening also commences at 8pm. Call (02) 9361 5398 or go to http://www.possibleworlds.net.au for more information on the screening. If it's in your nature to be a bit on the wild side, ACON's Safe Sex Sluts will be roaming the Darlinghurst section of Oxford Street from 8pm, handing out packs of safe condoms and lube. The famous Stonewall Hotel will be holding a Red Party benefit night. It kicks off at 9pm and costs a $5 donation to get in. Alternatively, the Flinders Hotel will be partying all night with Les De-Luxe. The party starts there at 9pm also. For those that can't join in the festivities on Friday night, don't despair. You have your chance on Sunday evening with Under The Mirror Ball, at the ARC nightclub. A $10 donation to get in, but you can party to your hearts content from 10pm. This Friday, December 1st, will be a day to remember. For more information on the Red Ribbon Appeal, head to http://www.redribbonday.org.au. HIV/AIDS: Let's talk about it. Many faces, many stories.
