Kazakh supermodel Ruslana Korshunova, who had appeared in campaigns for top international designers including Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, Christian Dior and DKNY, fell to her death from her 9th floor apartment in downtown Manhattan on June 28. A sought-after runway model known for her long cascading hair, Korshunova graced the covers of French Elle and Russian Vogue amongst others. Witnesses say they saw the 20 year old fall to her death at 2:30 p.m Saturday afternoon. She was discovered dead in the middle of a street, barefoot in blue jeans and a purple tank top. Construction netting had been erected around the apartment's balcony, making it completely enclosed, however the wiring had been cut, presumably by Ruslana prior to her jump. "Her arms were crushed," a witness told the NY Daily News. "Her head was on the left side and blood was coming out in a pool." New York City police say they found no signs of struggle in Korshunova's apartment, and the medical examiner's office has ruled the death a suicide. But what could have led such a seemingly successful woman to have ended it all? Friends and family are mystified, saying that in the days prior to her death Ruslana seemed in high spirits, had just returned from a job in Paris, and was looking forward to the future. However postings on her MySpace blog revealed a very different story. On the day of her fatal jump, Ruslana had updated her status as "distraught" and over the past months had written a series of melancholy blogs in which she pondered the future, her longing for love and apparent inability to be understood by those around her. Perhaps what we should take from this, if anything positive can come from such a promising life lost, is to look out for our friends and those around us. Things may not always be as great as they seem, no matter how seemingly successful and beautiful you are. RIP Ruslana xx
