Big Brother - Where has all the magic gone?

Published May 12, 2008
I didn't even move. I walked in and stood there. And I was like, am I going to spin or what?
Big Brother Rory Revolving Room

Well I might as well just skip past today’s Daily Show – and cut to the issue of the minute. The troubled Eviction Show.

Like any year, there are always the positive fans and the negative fans. You know different strokes for different folks.

As a fan, I have always remained positive about all the Big Brother dramas over the years, because I just love the show.

But tonight was a joke. Where has all the magic gone?

God I really don’t know where to start....

Ok so we have this new “Eviction Room”....

The “Exit Room” of previous years was great addition (when executed correctly). So it makes sense that concept has evolved this year.

Did it work? I’m not sure...

The rows of seating are all wrong. It looked strange when half the seats were vacated, and a bit of a waste of time. I think maybe just the three nominated housemates should be in there.

But then again what would the “Revolving Room” be used for then?

And on that subject, oh dear. Without a doubt, it would have to be the worst Big Brother stunt/idea/twist of all time.

Let’s just pause for one moment – imagine what was being talked about in the Channel Ten boardroom when BB08 was being pieced together.

Suddenly the “Revolving Room” is suggested by someone – but by whom?

Was it the owner of Dreamworld? Nobody likes the Gravitron anyway...

C’mon.... Big Brother is an INTERNATIONAL franchise, so how is it possible that this awful “Revolving Room” idea is brought to the table? I am shocked.

How cheesy - why have they stooped this low?

Needless to say, it didn’t help Big Brother stuffing up the whole “element of surprise” of the stupid room.

It should have been easy. Saxon, David & Rory were all loaded into the room (in that order). Later, the door opens to reveal the first of the “safe” housemates.

Standing there is Rory, but Big Brother announced “David”.

Ooops, so I guess Saxon is evicted then aye? What a poorly executed exercise.

It doesn’t stop there.

The piece de resistance would have to be Rory telling his fellow housemates that the “Revolving Room” doesn’t actually revolve. And that he stayed in the same spot the whole time whilst being in there.

In Rory saying that, we can see how Big Brother puts the evictee in the first “Revolving Room” compartment, with two “safe” housemates being placed into the last two compartments.

So who would have thought that the “Revolving Room” was an absolute sham? Well I say, who would have thought it would have EVER made it onto our TV screens?

This is Big Brother at its WORST. The producers should be in total OVERDRIVE after tonight... if they roll this rubbish out again next Sunday night, the ratings will fall so fast they won’t know what hit them.

I mean let’s face it – this room would have probably been a welcome arrival in the series after the split-houses (2003).

But in 2008, it sadly does not make the grade.

I just stopped writing this article to quickly chuck into the VCR my precious taping of the first ever Australian Big Brother eviction featuring Andy.

And it confirms my feeling of tonight’s new “method” of evicting housemates. Tonight did not feel like an actual eviction – but instead more like some unexciting mid-week eviction, or nominations show.

I do commend the Big Brother team for taking a “blank canvas” approach to this year, but that most certainly does not excuse tonight’s absolute stupidity.

What a risky break away from the international format...

So what happened to test driving the house and some of these new ideas before the series starts? I know it happened this year, because we heard the newspaper reporters crap on about in the Sunday paper. So why do we have to witness this tonight?

And still about tonight - since when do we see the host take such a non-neutral stance on questioning?

Never before has the former host ever acknowledged particular housemates popularity when crossing live to the house. Jackie O commented to Nobbi about the level of cheers for him from the audience – what the?

Plus another handful of other non-neutral comments vomited out of the hosts mouths – such as “the Terri question” at the closure of tonight’s show.

Never before have we, as an audience, been prompted so strongly to vote for a particular housemate.

The live crowd were asked by Kyle & Jackie O, “who will be saving Terri this week?”

Umm why do you ask? Nothing like push across some opinion there.

So much for the host taking a professional neutral stance on all matters.

That’s one thing about Gretel – yeah sure she might have given some housemates crap every now and then but she was always THE voice of the audience. And she never promoted ANY housemate in any capacity.

Tonight I missed the eviction runway, the “time to go” announcement and the overall hype of the whole thing.

The new format could work with some slight tweaking, which outrageously should have been tested. Long before being signed-off and running with it live.

As a loyal Big Brother fan since Tuesday 23rd April 2001, I am so very sad and disappointed about tonight.

We MUST not see another eviction night like this ever again. The Sunday night show is Big Brother’s jewel in the crown, the centrepiece of the show. And without it, the whole series is compromised.

Virginia – as much as I hate to say it, YOU have hit the first nail in the coffin for the show. Which I thought would be impossible.

Yeah sure with Noble it was the same old crap, but I’d rather see that than some poorly executed revolving room. Cheese factor much?
