In choosing movies to view at the MQFF, one aim was to avoid the ‘lesbian having a baby storyline’. A lesbian vampire film appeared to be a good bet…but no so. A lesbian film with no babies? Couldn’t be! But this time, a vampire baby. VAMPIRE DIARIES has a faux documentary style within the film, following filmmaker Holly as she chronicles the weekend vampire scene in London. Subsequently, she falls for “real” vampire Vicki and the film spirals into a gore-fest as the vampire baby demands sustenance.

In short, this movie is terrible. Not, “so bad, it’s good”, just plain bad. With a prior warning to “avoid at all costs” we should have known better than to watch it. However, the leads are attractive and there’s quite a lot of blood and self-mutilating, if you’re into that sort of thing. It has an interesting take on the vampire mythology so die-hard Dracula fans may be interested. If you are going to watch this genre of films, you pretty much know what to expect and what you are getting yourself in for. But this really begs the question, is this the best the MQFF could find?

Showing at the MQFF, Friday March 14th @ 8pm
