If you’ve read our pre-show interview with The Umbilical Brothers, you’ll know that the boys don’t rehearse. So naming their current show ‘The Rehearsal’ was a bit of a joke in itself. But when you get to the show you realize that this is the boys’ idea of ‘practice’. They start off with an idea and evolve it on stage when performing live. If something works, then they continue to work on it until they have a sketch.
Although not everything was spontaneously created, the show is extremely funny nonetheless. And there is no doubting the Umbies talent or comedic abilities. This show is not all about ‘sound’, but over the years the boys have evolved to create shows of a much more theatrical nature. Some of the funniest parts involved a camera that was hooked up to a huge projector screen. The way the guys played with the images and shadows were hilarious.
There were times during the show where the energy levels dropped, as can be expected from a ‘rehearsal’, however the boys definitely gained momentum towards the end, performing some of their more familiar sketches.
I can only recommend that you do get down to see them before the end of their season here (which is only 5 nights) as they can only get better with practice!!!
