Zach is a talented artist who dreams of attending arts school, instead being forced to give up his aspirations due to family reasons. Zach’s life revolves around working as a cook, art, surfing and unselfishly taking care of his 5 year old nephew while his sister lives the party life. He feels stuck in this situation and like his friends have all moved onto better things.
When his best friend’s older brother, Shaun, returns home after a break-up, Zach finds a much needed companion and finds any excuse to spend time with him. Shaun is a writer who is very open about his sexuality, and is surprised to hear that Zach read his book and liked it. Shaun is drawn in by Zach’s talent and selflessness and eventually makes the moves on Zach. Zach is overcome by emotion and desire but is also conflicted by the needs and prejudices of his family. Shaun offers him a lot of support and encouragement, but will Zach ever live the life he longs for?
This is a very emotional movie, with many sweet and intimate scenes, all played out beautifully by the very talented actors. The evocative shots of the Californian coastline contrasting with the claustrophobia of Zach’s home and work life displays his frustration and yearning to escape. While it is a coming out movie, it’s not the only theme in this movie and, to its credit; keeps you interested from start to finish.
