VILLAGE ROADSHOW
Being a fan of both Heath ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal this film is a joy to watch. To both their credit they did an outstanding job in creating a moving and emotional movie. The direction of Ang Lee was flawless. The location, scenery and the mountains round of this bag of goodies.
Country Wyoming is not a place that many people want to live unless you are a cowboy. So during the summer of 1963 Jack and Ennis come looking for work as cowboys. They are given a job with very hard conditions. They are placed in the middle of nowhere with little protection from the forces of nature and the wild animals.
As the two are left alone for months on end with no other human contact, a close bond forms. Jack is very confident with his sexuality, while Ennis tries very hard to deny what he feels. On an unexpected visit by their boss he sees what the two have been up to. They are caught in a passionate embrace.
As the two go on about their daily duties, they are unaware that they have been caught. When the summer end’s they return home and go there separate ways. Jack travels to Texas to look for work, while Ennis returns to his childhood sweet heart Alma played by Michelle Williams. At this point in the film it became apparent that years of living a double life was second nature to them both.
We jump ahead a few years and both the guys are married with children. Still living a lie and having not accepted what each feels, Jack decides to pay his old friend a visit. The two take a “camping trip” to catch up on old times, much to the suspicion of Alma who sees them making out behind the shed when they meet each other.
After a falling out Jack stops making contact with Ennis. Still trying to deal with his love for Jack after all this time he chooses to find him to resolve so many issues.
This is a remarkable film that deals with many issues like honesty, acceptance and growing up in rural USA. Jack and Ennis flawed characters but it what makes this a good story overall.
