This powerful film starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep and Amy Adams is a must see for fans of theatre and these big name stars. Doubt was originally a theatre productions running in London, New York and Sydney over the past few years.
Set in 1964 in the Bronx, Doubt is a serious and meaningful story about change, honesty and people’s perception during the sixties. Father Flynn played brilliantly by Hoffman, is a caring and devoted servant of the church. As parish priest he must deal with sister Aloysius and Sister James almost on a daily basis.
Sister James played by Adams is young, impressionable and devoted to teaching history and following Sister Aloysius’ often backward and petty rules in her school. The Sisters are and students alike are fearful of Sister Aloysius and the iron hold that she has in her position as headmistress.
When a new student arrives to the school, he is singled out because he is the first black student to attend St Nicholas. Donald is a quiet and ambitious young man who quickly strikes up a kind friendship with father Flynn. Flynn accepts him as one of his altar boys and things seem to be going well for Donald in his new school.
Out of nowhere Sister Aloysius begins to suspect without any proof whatsoever, that Father Flynn and Donald are having an improper relationship. On a mission to destroy his name she convinces Sister James that he suspicions are correct and enlists her to her scheme to find the truth.
Doubt is an extremely emotional and powerful film. Streep is pure gold in every scene and once again proves why she is one of the greatest living actresses today.
