20th Century-Fox's 2-disc special editions of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE and THE TOWERING INFERNO are both superb presentations -- excellent commentaries, great original featurettes (and vintage ones as well), interviews, promotional materials etc.

THE TOWERING INFERNO is extremely well done and holds up beautifully, with some genuinely scary moments and flawless special effects -- but for all that, it just isn't THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE.  INFERNO doesn't have anywhere near the heart or human warmth POSEIDON has, which has kept the fans (including yours truly) seeing it again and again and again for all these years.  I just didn't care all that much about the characters in INFERNO, with the notable exceptions of Fred Astaire and, especially, Jennifer Jones.

The INFERNO disc does have a generally excellent commentary by film critic F.X. Feeney (of all people), as well as two scene-specific commentaries -- one about the special effects and one about the stunts.  In a way though, the commentary tracks match their respective movies in tone -- POSEIDON has two commentaries, one by director Ronald Neame and the other by actresses Stella Stevens, Carol Lynley and Pamela Sue Martin.  These are much more warm and friendly, and greatly entertaining -- particularly in listening to the three ladies reminisce and laugh out loud with each other about all the fun they had!

The POSEIDON featurettes are all fascinating too, including one called Heroes of the Poseidon which delves into the religious and faith-based aspects of the story and the characters.  There's also a fun little feature called Follow the Escape! which provides a layout of the upside-down ship that shows you periodically where the characters are as they work their way up toward the bottom of the doomed vessel.  You can access this feature by pressing the "Enter" button on your remote whenever a symbol appears in the bottom-right corner of the TV screen.  Wonderful stuff.
