Set in New York City in the late eighties this film looks at crime and the influx of drugs into the city. The high mixture of drugs and partying create the basis for this film. The dark underworld that existed in the city at that time is brought to light along with some Russian mobsters.
Burt Grusinksy (Robert Duvall) is a high ranking police captain. He has raised two very different sons, Jo and Bobby played by Phoenix and Wahlberg.
Joseph is following in his fathers footsteps, and is an honest and trustworthy police officer. Bobby is the opposite, he is a drug addicted night club manager.
We soon learn early on that both brothers have a history of tension between them. They are always clashing as they are on opposite ends of the law.
Bobby goes to extremes to keep his family history a secret by not using the family name. When the New York police department announce they are cracking down on drugs, the first thing they do is raid Bobby’s nightclub. This ensures an all out battle between the family both in and out of the home.
This film plot is quiet good holding a few unexpected twists, but it has all the elements of a good guy bad guy film. There are car chases and the usual amount of violence that you would expect.
Eva Mendes is surprisingly quiet good in the film, playing the trampy girlfriend of Bobby. Her performance in this film really stood out.
