The 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will be shown on Bravo on Friday 27th June at 7pm.
The awards were created in 1990 by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to recognize and honour those in the mainstream media for representing the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives in a fair, accurate and inclusive manner.
Awards include:
Davidson/Valentini Award – presented in San Francisco to an openly LGBT individual who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for the LGBT community. Past winners have included Sandra Bernhard and Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman.
Excellence in Media Award - presented in New York to individuals in the media and entertainment industries who through their work have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community. Past winners have included Diane Sawyer and Julianne Moore.
Golden Gate Award - presented in San Francisco to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community. Past winners have included Stockard Channing, Megan Mullally, Jennifer Beals and Jennifer Tilly.
Stephen F. Kolzak Award - presented to an openly gay member of the entertainment or media community for his or her work toward eliminating homophobia. Past winners have included Sir Ian McKellen, Ellen DeGeneres and Melissa Etheridge.
Vanguard Award - presented at the Los Angeles GLAAD Media Awards to honor a member of the entertainment community who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for LGBT people. Past winners have included Cher, Whoopi Goldberg, Antonio Banderas, Charize Theron and Janet Jackson.
Vito Russo Award - presented to an openly lesbian or gay member of the entertainment or media community for outstanding contributions toward eliminating homophobia. Winners have included Nathan Lane, Rosie O’Donnel and Alan Cumming.
