SYTYCD Top 12 Performance Show

Another week and yet another guest judge in Kelley Abbey. Natalie introduced two new surprises this week: 1) the contestants will have two dances to perform in the one show and 2) one of them will be choreographed by themselves. Handing the challenge over to the dancers to choreograph was a fantastic way of showing the fans that there is more to their favourite dancers and I applaud whoever came up with that stroke of genius.

Graeme and Kate (with a pinched nerve) opened ‘er up tonight with a jazz routine to Guns ‘n’ Roses. Awesome costumes, well choreographed moves and funky lighting made watching this dance exhilarating.

But first up with their own choreo were JD and Rhiannon. The bouncy pop dance wasn’t very well received by Jason who related it to a cruise ship routine. Give them a break, they aren’t choreo-ers! Rhys and Gemma played horsey with their own choreographed routine to ‘Pony’. Bonnie’s comment about the judging being on the dancing and not their choreography basically dumped all over Jason’s comments regarding JD and Rhiannon’s choreography. And as Matt said, “This isn’t So You Think You Can Choreograph.” Take that, Jason.

What happened in Vanessa and Henry’s routine? Very very weird. They always get the weird, out-of-this-world shit. Neither dancer knew what the type of contemporary martial arts that they were learning. However the end result looked fairly tight despite lacking a lot of dancing.

Of course, musical numbers are the campest kind of dance there is ..

I was so excited knowing that Anthony and Camilla were going to dance together after losing their partners Sermsah and Laura. These two both have so much to offer and to steal words out of Matt’s mouth, they “compliment each other.” The lambada requires a lot of heated passion and both of them looked like they came streaming out of some tropical island. After Jason claimed that they lacked the sex that the lambada is known for, Natalie came back with a comment got me laughing: “This is a family show.”

After Demi and Jack ripped out a jumpy R ‘n’ B routine with some nice snaps, Rhys and Gemma were back on stage all of a sudden with a musical number from ‘Copacabana’. This one just spotlighted how Rhys can put it on without actually putting it on. Of course, musical numbers are the campest kind of dance there is but Rhys didn’t cheese it to the extreme which weaker dancers would have done. With Rhys’s jump-splint and their synchronisation, the flow of the entire dance fitted so fantastically.

Another poppy choreographed routine was created by Kate and Graeme as their danced their own stuff to the Black Eyed Peas. Next was Rhiannon looking very sexy and smooth during Craig David’s ‘Flava’ but a little too fluid for a hip hop routine by the infamous but popular Nacho Pop. It sat so well with JD who was stiffer and more rigid which was required for such a routine. A nice change was to see some floor work. Thank god for the wardrobe people who made sure Rhiannon’s pants fitted well above her knobbly hips this week.

I thoroughly enjoyed Camilla and Anthony’s little dance to ‘Stronger’ by Kanye West. It was punchy with a ton of tricks. Although if they both had have stopped cheering on the crowd, then I’m sure they could have actually pulled more moves out. The final lift at the end was an absolute stunner.

Unlike all the others with their own choreo, Henry and Vanessa actually starting dancing immediately to the music. It was a first with Vanessa, pulling out the sexual alpha female which knocked me for six. I would never have thought such a little gentle woman could hit me for six in such a hot way. Why oh why did we need to rip Henry’s top? I’ve seen enough of his skin to last ten hetero lifetimes.

Jack and Demi got the contemporary that they were after, although I found it more odd than contemporary. Demi appeared rather tired toward the end of such an energetic routine. More floor work was lovely to see but it came off a bit of a mess especially with the ending.

And that’s all she wrote. I hope we get to see some more dances choreographed by our favourite contestants along the way although maybe next time they could try something a little less poppy or jazzy and a little more imaginative and alternative. Whoever it is dancing for their lives tomorrow night, the judges are gonna have a rough time with their last decision as to who is going home.
