So You Think You Can Dance Top 20 Verdict

Tonight on Dance, everyone’s favourite part to any reality TV show: the elimination. That is, almost everyone’s. This is the part where we all sit screaming at the television because us viewers, in our mature wisdom and having seen the previous night’s performances, know exactly who is going home. But that’s at the end of the show, let’s start at the beginning…

We start again with a Kelly Abbey choreographed dance routine and again, the camera shots were terribly close and don’t allow the viewer to see the whole scene unfold before them. There are 3 cameras right in line with the stage floor, one in front and two to the sides, however the best angles are the ones coming from the over arching cameras. We need the perspective of the whole stage during the full cast routines. It’s understandable to have the close up shot with the partners but when they are all dancing on stage, how can we get the overall feeling that the audience gets without seeing the whole picture?
Anyway, it was good to see a bit of gender bending as Demi portrayed one of the guys in the performance, with an open shirt and bra. So next week can we expect Rhys dressed as a girl?

The first contestants dancing for their lives on the show were Hilton and Courtney, Henry and Vanessa and Kate and Khaly. Thank God the countdown from the American show was there as that effect is fantastic to watch (too bad the Aussie audience hasn’t really caught on to counting down yet). Hilton’s dance had a bit too much stripping and the hood wasn’t a good idea. Khaly and Kate killed it with lots of energy and obvious practice. The Veronicas played ‘Untouched’ in between dancers which rocked with a live electric guitar.

can’t our Dance show have a little Aussie twist instead of the same old boring process?

With some tears, Courtney was booted due to her lack of progression in the series while the judges felt that Khaly wasn’t going to give them any more than what he had already shown and had peaked too early. Personally I felt that Khaly was a unique personality that could have matured into other areas of dance but was not given the chance.

Jason’s comments sound awfully like what was said on the American Dance “Australia didn’t get it wrong because they’re the ones voting.” Not to mention Natalie’s constant repetition of “what Australia thought” exactly how the American version does it. Can we please have some originality? I mean I know that it’s stolen from the US but can’t our Dance show have a little Aussie twist instead of the same old boring process. From the sounds of it, the script has only been changed to accommodate the Australian contestants. Although by the end of it Natalie seemed to have worked out that it was starting to pain us listening to it over and over again and she dropped the line completely.

There it was, the first week complete with tears and surprises. Australia’s Dance may have a few kinks to work out and they definitely need to get off their high horse about how good their dancers are (we know already. That’s why we watch!), but hey there’s another 10 weeks and 18 dancers to go. Be prepared for more tears, more surprises and more amazing dance routines as these kids just get better and better.
