Oh my God. How empty is the stage at the beginning now? Wow, only Kate, Vanessa, Demi, Jack, Rhys and Graeme are left and that stage is looking mighty huge. As the judges got introduced as the useless job descriptions that they have now, I thought that Jason had a hand twitch or something because this is at least the second time he has pulled out the sideways backwards peace sign. What’s that about?
A sexy rumba is what overcame Rhys and Kate (although the walking out onto the stage into first position was a bit wanky, despite what Bonnie might have thought). The intensity throughout their whole performance was maintained and crescendoed at the right time. Jason Gilkison’s choreography never falters and he makes it seem as if we’re not watching a rumba, that we’re just watching a relationship unfold. Having two fantastic dancers to nail all the lifts and the moves just made it a joy to watch.
So Demi and Jack were back together, attempting a contemporary routine which Demi twisted her ankle rehearsing for. With such a static, sharp and just plain weird dance, synchronicity was going to be a big important player. Demi seemed a little behind the beat while Jack punched and nailed each move. Despite the unison being out, the overall performance was slick and staccato.
our next surprise was to have the girls dance as a threesome!
That meant Graeme and Vanessa were left together, doing a Broadway routine by Adam Williams. Such an outstanding choreography made me smile and giggle throughout. It seemed like so much fun especially as both dancers really got into their wacky characters. Vanessa finally seems to have gotten the hang of other genres of dance, as she threw herself completely into this poor, funny character. A well deserved hearty applause echoed throughout the audience as Graeme ended the performance by flying off the stage.
After the standard couple dances, our next surprise was to have the girls dance as a threesome! There was so much going on, I don’t know where to start! Firstly, Vanessa didn’t really pull off the sexy. She’s too much of a good girl. Kate couldn’t shake the jazz out of her and so was always a little bit jumpy when it’s supposed to be a gangsta style routine. Demi looked the most comfortable of course, this being closer to her genre than the others. The unison was slightly out for most of the dance but hey I found it an awesome change of pace to see the girls dance together and as a three! And yes, the last half of the performance did have some naughty, raunchy moves. Excellent idea whoever thought up that.
And so of course, that means the guys get to dance together! YAYYYY! I will mention yet again that the camera work we saw tonight was not conducive to the performance that has more than 2 people are dancing. The focus was too close to capture all the action. Having said that it was easy to see that Supple went a little crazy with his choreography. Again, there was an insane amount of dance going on here.
Rhys in his costume came off way more feminine than he’s ever appeared on this show, doing a sexy leap frog over the other two. Graeme had fantastic diversity and Jack jumped straight over a straight standing Graeme. Together, they stuck all their synchronisation and played slapstick with each other characters. I think Jason was trying to give a compliment when he said that the only fault was that he couldn’t compare the dancers and give the audience his opinion on who came out better in that performance.
It needs to be said, the boys simply killed it tonight. Too bad one girl and one boy hafta go home, no matter how much better the guys danced than the girls. We’ll see tomorrow when six become four.
