So we’re almost at a dozen dancers. This week will ensure that. We’ve lost a few good soldiers along this long narrow road of triumph however the show must go on. But let’s get down to the real issues, like Natalie’s hair styles! Can someone please tell me what was going wrong with Nat’s hair this week??? The straight fringe did nothing for her, I preferred the fuzzy lion look (refer to previous reviews). And if Jason thought a hot pink shirt would make him seem nicer, he was sadly, poorly and very much mistaken.
Firstly, Rhys and Gemma threw everything they had into a hip hop routine that required a hose to cool off the fire or a disclaimer at the beginning. Something along the lines of ‘this routine is rated M+ for sexual references and nudity’. Matt got a little feisty after an audience member suggested that someone slap him for criticising Rhys and Gemma for being too slow.
Demi can’t seem to cut a break with the dance genres. She’s always out of her comfort zone. I can’t wait to see her strut her stuff but until then I am thoroughly enjoying her versatility. She pulled off the rumba this week without almost a trip yet, just like Matt said, the romance wasn’t quite there. Having chosen not to wear high heels, Jason and Bonnie disagreed with Demi’s decision as heels would have strengthened her lines.
After the shock of the Bottom Three, Laura really made herself step up a notch this week. Being an Avril lookalike and having Anthony jump from the railing, instead of seeing this ordinary standard girl, Laura came off as the stronger dancer. However the judges thought differently; Matt wasn’t moved, Bonnie is worried about Laura in the competition and Jason just ripped it apart as lacking acting ability. Well, too bad because I actually liked this dance and could feel that Laura was obsessed with this boy.
Natalie’s comments about stealing Camilla’s hair made me choke on my lima beans. NO!!!!! Not more hair faux pas!
How on earth did Camilla and Sermsah get hiphop again? Despite their improvements, I found the same problems as last time: not in time again and missed a lift. The story of the routine came through perfectly though. The choice of song “The Way I Are” definitely helped by getting the audience interactive and applauding, but the ending felt a little muddled and too quick after having such a solid clear beginning. Also in a rare occasion, I actually agreed with Jason regarding Sermsah’s responsibility for being in tune with Camilla when she is downstage. Natalie’s comments about stealing Camilla’s hair made me choke on my lima beans. NO!!!!! Not more hair faux pas!
The God of Choreography that is Jason Gilkinson, brought a warm earthy African feel to the show by orchestrating a samba routine for Henry and Vanessa. Vanessa immediately was lost in the character which set the tone dramatically. With such a stunning piece of choreography and a strong ballroom background in Henry, this routine was easily the stand out of the night. If the pulling off of the face smashing lift at the end wasn’t enough, then the rest of the performance surely was. Bonnie brought to light Vanessa’s modesty while Jason had nothing bad to say about the performance at all. If it weren’t for the terrible camera angles, it would have been a spellbinding performance. I am pulling away from Henry moreso every week. Yes, he is a fantastic dancer with some brilliant moves but he likes the limelight a little too much and I find his personality on screen rather grating. His new crew cut brings a sharpness to him which is a contrast to his smooth dancing style.
The second last couple for the night was Kate and Graeme. Kate’s jazz training had a little effect on her contemporary performance. Coldplay’s “Fix You” worked so well in terms of the story however I felt the editing could have included the harder guitar bridge from the song, which would have fit the sharper moves better. As Jason said, the unison and synchronising within the performance was simply amazing, as if a puppeteer moves them together and these two are the best in the competition in this area.
Poor JD, he was literally dragged to the jazz rehearsal. Great opening, great ending and superb costumes gave this routine a kick. It’s easy to see that both JD and Rhiannon were having fun, a huge extreme from last week’s disappointment. However, Rhiannon still comes off the stronger dancer which may be due to her being in her element this week. JD’s lines could have been a bit stronger and stretched a bit longer but on the whole, the performance was well done.
My favourites are starting to actualise in the form of Anthony, Rhys and Demi. And also despite my initial complaints about her hips, Rhiannon makes the list too. Onward to tomorrow night!
