The Sexual Life of Us
Broadcast: 7 and 14 March 2008 - 10.00pm (SBS)

This detailed documentary looks at the sexual revolution between generations. All age groups and sexual preferences are looked covered here. It’s clear from the beginning of this doco that in today’s day and age sexual confidence amongst young people is the highest that it has ever been at.

In the 1950’s it was custom to seek parental approval before “stepping out” for an evening. We see earlier on in the 1920’s that any kind of sex was only explored after marriage. The main reason for this is sexuality was closely guarded and controlled by the church. This created a much ignorant society though out that time.

Even though many people got married when they were young, one of the women on the documentary, Latisha sees her self old when she was married at 21 and didn’t have sex till a few years after. The 20 people interviewed range from 18 to 104; this gives an honest impression of sex over many years.

These very personal interviews create a true and realistic look at sex in Australian society. From the older participants we learn that they were never taught anything about sex in any way from their parents or grandparents.

Homosexuality is featured with some stories about a gay man, and his first experience with his next door neighbour. The personal stories of the men and women featured in this documentary are what make this a unique experience for the viewer; no two stories are the same.
