Imperial Hotel

The front bar is a beautifully theatrical room, with an ornate oval ceiling and a huge, Art Deco-style nude sculpture behind the service area. Numerous glitter balls hang from the ceiling, shooting coloured light around the room.

But there's also a feeling of grittiness.

Despite the glitter balls, the light is dim and makes the cheap bar furniture look worse than it should. The crowd of regulars don't seem to mind at all and most are having a ball.

I'm served a delicious beer by a friendly barmaid and take a seat in the corner.

I'm not a regular frequenter of gay bars and for a while I feel awkward and unsure of etiquette. Is it rude to look at the pretty gay girls? What are the right words for politely dealing with an unwanted approach?

But the happy mood of the patrons is contagious.

Two men in jeans are laughing merrily as they take each other on at pool. A couple of girls in the corner are getting smoochy over mixed drinks. A group of six girls looks like they're having a regular Thursday night catch-up and are swapping stories and laughing over beers.

Pick-up potential depends largely on your sexual orientation.

The dress code on a Thursday night was casual jeans and tops for both sexes and the soundtrack dance and disco, courtesy of a video jukebox.

A back bar is used for drag shows.
