Rufus Wainwright in Adelaide Feb 2008
The eccentric, fabulous and prodigiously talented Rufus Wainwright is coming to Australia with a full band for the first time. The national tour kicks off in January 2008, and promises to be a heart-stopping, unmissable evening for fans of eminently sophisticated songwriting and heavenly musical orchestration.
Rufus has previously appeared in Australia for a string of acclaimed solo shows, in addition to combined performances with his sister Martha, and mother and aunt folk music legends, Kate and Anna McGarrigle. He was also featured in an all-star line-up of Leonard Cohen devotees, including Nick Cave and former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, at the Sydney Opera House several years back performing with 'Came So Far For Beauty, An Evening of Leonard Cohen Songs'.
But his current show is a lovingly detailed, musically varied tour-de-force, which has been garnering praise from critics in Europe and The United States. Mick Conmy of the BBC Online said, “This was not just a gig; this was an evening of theatre, drama, and high camp cabaret. His voice wraps you up in a soft comfort blanket of melancholy reverie and the songs ache of passion, angst and warmth. Rufus is the bravest performer I have ever seen and his career trajectory soars ever higher.”
The tour is in support of his latest and fifth album, 2007’s Release the Stars. It’s a gorgeous record which features in his current set list, and has been receiving four star reviews wherever it lands. Just like this one from The Guardian: “A wonderful album, packed with stunning melodies and brilliant lyrics.”
Longer term, and newly inducted fans of Rufus Wainwright are destined to be entirely satisfied, and yet left wanting more after attending these concerts. With an 8 piece band supporting him, Rufus creates a huge sound, akin to listening to a classical jazz crossover performance with captivating vocals, mesmerising lyrics and engaging banter.
