Could the tides be turning? In a ruling not dissimilar to the one made earlier this year in California, the Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled 4-3 in favour of gay marriage, stating that civil unions were an insufficient substitute.
Also mirroring the California ruling, the Republican governor of Connecticut, Mary Jodi Rell, has said that she disagrees with the verdict personally but will not fight it.
"I am also firmly convinced that attempts to reverse this decision, either legislatively or by amending the state Constitution, will not meet with success. I will therefore abide by the ruling” Rell said.
As expected the GLBT community in Conneticut has greeted the news with open arms and is a welcome relief for gay rights supporters nation-wide (and even world-wide).
This ruling comes amidst contention in California regarding gay marriage, Prop. 8 being an anti-gay marriage measure that would eliminate the rights of gays and lesbians to marry. If prop. 8 passed it would be a huge setback in the fight to full marriage equality for the GLBT community. The outcome will be known following the November Presidential election.
