Manchester City Council has been hailed as Britain's top gay-friendly local authority for the fourth consecutive year.

The council was voted the highest-ranking local authority in the latest Corporate Equality Index, compiled by lesbian and gay lobbying organisation Stonewall.

Participating organisations were questioned about their employment practices, such as having a non-discrimination policy and a lesbian and gay employee network group.

The council says it has a "genuine commitment" to ensuring that all employees work in an environment where they are secure and confident regardless of sexual orientation.

Councillor Paul Fairweather said: "I am delighted that our achievements have been recognised again this year, in the face of fierce competition.

"Equal opportunities are an integral part of the city council's culture and it is fantastic to see that recognised in these awards."

Readers of Pink Paper recently voted the Manchester City Council Employer of the Year and Best Council in the publication's annual awards.

And both the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University were named as the top education institutions for gay students.
