300,000 expected at Mardi Gras

After having crowds of an estimated 350,000 at last year’s parade, a similar number is expected to make their way to Oxford Street, Darlinghurst for the 30th Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade this evening.

The parade, which will commence at 7.45pm, will be lead out traditionally by the Dykes on Bikes, who are this year participating in the festival ending event for the twentieth time.

The Chief of Parade is critically acclaimed comedian Margaret Cho, who has recently performed in both Sydney and Melbourne.

Cho has been honoured by GLAAD, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force as well as PFLAG, all of which came to a surprise to Cho.

“I didn't mean to be a role model. I just speak my truth. I guess speaking from your heart really creates a huge impact, and if I can encourage people to do that, then I would love to be a role model. If I could encourage people to use their voices loudly, then that's my reward.”

150 floats will appear in the parade, with up to 10,000 people marching.

The parade commences from the corner of Elizabeth and Liverpool streets, continues through Oxford Street, before making its way to Flinders Street and the Moore Park intersection.

Olivia Newton-John, The Potbelleez and Faker will all perform at the parade after party, which takes place at the Royal Hall of Industries, Entertainment Quarter.

Newton-John expressed delight in performing this evening, and said  “I can't think of a better way to start this year off with than singing at Mardi Gras!

“The gay community has always been a major supporter of mine and I am hopelessly devoted to each and every one of them! I can't wait!”

Road closures commence from 2.30pm. Visit the RTA website for more information.
