Gays seek meeting with Christian lobby over 'hurtful myths and misinformation'

Australian gay activists have written to the head of the Australian Christian Lobby, Jim Wallace, over what they say are the ACL's hurtful myths and misinformation about same-sex relationships.

Australian Coalition for Equality spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said that following Mr Wallace's appearance on the ABC's Lateline program the group has asked for a meeting with Mr Wallace to present the facts.

"By quoting statistics which are out of context or just plain wrong, Jim Wallace has left the nation with the impression that same-sex couples are less loving, less committed and less worthy of legal and social recognition than their heterosexual counterparts", Mr Croome said.

"This is hurtful to many same-sex couples and their families."

Mr Croome dismissed Wallace's claim that only 2% of same-sex couples are monogamous, and same-sex relationships last for a much shorter period.

"In countries which allow same-sex marriage or civil unions, same-sex divorce rates are the same as, or lower than, rates of heterosexual divorce", he said.

"Mr Wallace also wrongly quoted the Census as an indicator of the number of same-sex couples, when experts in the field acknowledge the number is much larger."

Mr Croome said he will extend an invitation to Mr Wallace to meet same-sex couples and their families so he can see for himself the love and commitment in same-sex unions, and the pain his views cause.

"The human face of this issue reveals not only that Mr Wallace's statistics are wrong, but that ultimately love and equality are what's important here, not numbers."
