Oxford Street to be officially homophobia free

Homophobic behaviour in certain parts of Sydney could see patron’s rights to enter late-night venues revoked as the City of Sydney Council begins to finalize policy that would see homophobia free zones set up across the Sydney CBD and surrounding areas.

Areas that are likely to have the zones take effect include Oxford Street, King Street, and Erskineville Road as well as other areas of Darlinghurst and Newtown.

Businesses in nearby areas are also expected to be encouraged to display homophobia free signs and/or stickers to ensure patrons that they are gay friendly.

Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore says that the strategy recognizes the importance of the GLBT community to Sydney.

Proposer of the zones, Phillip Black, said that the zones would be similar to alcohol and nuclear free zones.

“At this point, the ball is with council staff to develop a proposal that will come back to council over the next few months, but it could involve stickers, badges, posters and T-shirts similar to the Safe Place pink triangle campaign. We have to create awareness that homophobia is not acceptable.”

The final vote by council was five votes to four in favour of the initiative, with strong opposition being voiced over the plan; those opposed include openly gay councillor who has described the policy as a “PR stunt”.

The City of Sydney Council is expected to consult with the AIDS Council of NSW as well as numerous other community groups before the policy is finalized.

How can we create homophobia free zones? Are there racism free zones? How is this expected to be policed? "oh oh I wanna complain because I got called a 'fag' on Oxford street which is supposed to be homophobia free, please arrest that person." Also, you can't possibly force businesses to display gay friendly paraphernalia.

This policy will merely segregate the gay community further from the heterosexual community, which is not (to my understanding) what we want to achieve. Placing ourselves on a pedestal is not going to create a more harmonious environment.

People are mean. Such is life. Deal with it.

Seems Clover Moore is at it again with her rhetoric or is this another attempt by ACON to set themselves up for more public funding? Either way it's a token suggestion meant to placate the voters and alas it seems to have worked. Let them eat cake.
