So... what is news in 5 minutes?
It’s pretty self explanatory really! Every 24-48 hours, GenQ will create a ‘news in 5 minutes’ page containing the essential information on the latest GLBT news as well as major headlines around the world. Any guesses as to how long it should take to read...?

UGANDA - Lack of funds results in gays missing out
The Ugandan government stated on Monday that programs relating to treatment, prevention and diagnosis of HIV/AIDS for gay people would not receive any funding in the near future due to a lack of funds.
Uganda AIDS commission chairman Kihumuro Apuuli said “Gays are one of the drivers of HIV in Uganda, but because of meagre resources we cannot direct our programmes at them at this time.”
Instead, attention will be given to other ‘high risk groups’ such as truck drivers, sex workers and remote fishing communities.

WORLD – Outgoing UN chief speaks out of treatment of gays and women
The outgoing human rights chief for the United Nations Louise Arbour spoke out on Monday over the unfair treatment of women and gay people in many countries around the world, and has called for equal condemnation of rights violations.
“The perpetuation of prejudices continues to deny equal rights and dignity to millions worldwide on the basis of nothing more innocuous than their sexual identity or orientation, or their ancestry in the case of caste discrimination,” Arbour said.

SPAIN – Two arrested over “gay proposals”
Two men have been arrested in Gambia on Monday after allegedly making “homosexual proposals” to taxi drivers, police have stated.
The arrest comes just weeks after the President of Gambia ordered gay people to leave the country and that gay people should be “cut off the head” if their sexuality is discovered.
If found guilty, the men could serve lengthy jail terms.

UNITED STATES – Clinton vs Obama battle coming to an end
It is now just a matter of days before Barack Obama is expected to be announced as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming November election.
Both Obama and candidate Hilary Clinton campaigned on Monday ahead of the final primaries in South Dakota and Montana.
Obama needs just 40 delegates to claim the nomination, but will still need to rely on undecided super delegates to achieve the required number.
Obama recently said in Michigan that ‘once the dust has settled’, he looks forward to working with Clinton ahead of the election. “Senator Clinton has run an outstanding race, she is an outstanding public servant, and she and I will be working together in November,” Obama said.

FRANCE – Designer Yves Saint Laurent dies aged 71
Described as a cultural innovator who revolutionized women’s fashion, designer Yves Saint Laurent has passed away at the age of 71.
Speaking to RTL Radio, Laurent’s companion Pierre Berge said that the designer had been diagnosed with a brain tumour last year and died on Sunday.
The president of France Nicolas Sakorzy described Laurent as a creative genius. “He was convinced that beauty was a luxury that every man and woman needed.”

UNITED STATES - Kelsey Grammer has heart attack
A spokesperson for actor Kelsey Grammer has confirmed that the fifty-three year old has had a mild heart attack in Hawaii.
Associated Press reports that Grammer is said to be resting comfortably, and is expected to be released from hospital later this week.
It is the second time that Grammer has made headlines within the past week, with his most recent television series Back To You being axed in the US.

UNITED KINGDOM - Sam Sparro slams Madonna
After falling short of having his first number one single in the UK, Sam Sparro has gone on the attack, describing Madonna as “vulgar”, “wretched” and someone who is not sexy anymore.
In an interview with Attitude magazine, Sparro said “Madonna is wretched at the moment – absolutely vulgar. Put it away.” Sparro also claimed that Madonna had resorted to ‘desperate measures’ to return to the top of the charts.
Black & Gold was pipped at the top of the charts by 4 Minutes which features the vocals of Justin Timberlake; both singles are predicted to be amongst the highest sellers of the year.

And that’s your News in 5 Minutes for today. Stop the clock!
